The facebook boom is evidence alone of the power and success of social networking sites. Ning is a free social networking site which allows users to create their own networks/site. These sites could be for a unit/module, a class/year group or a department. They are especially good places to share resources or information regarding specific projects e.g. fundraising or M-learning with like minded people. GotZapp
A site i have recently come across although i have not had chance to try and test yet.
